APPLES 2017 Alternative Winter Break applications

APPLES Alternative Winter Break (AWB) typically lasts six days while the university is closed between the fall and spring semesters. This year, the APPLES Service-Learning program will offer four unique alternative winter break opportunities for UNC undergraduates. Students spend the work with experienced community partners and reflect upon their learning experiences. APPLES sponsors AWB experiences in the following focus areas: Alpha Phi Omega (APO) hunger and homelessness, rural communities, disaster relief and violence prevention. Hurricane Matthew update and Adopt-a-Home program

The Carolina Center for Public Service will host a Hurricane Matthew update briefing 9 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, room 3503. Since December 2016, the Center has partnered with the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church (NCCUMC) to support Hurricane Matthew disaster relief efforts in Princeville, Lumberton and Fayetteville, North Carolina. The 18th annual Public Service Fair is 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Pit. Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to visit with more than 30 local nonprofits that will be on campus to share information and recruit volunteers. Buckley Public Service Scholars fall enrollment

Fall enrollment for the Buckley Public Service Scholars program is open Aug. 18 to Sept. 30. All undergraduate students with at least four semesters remaining at Carolina can enroll in the Buckley Public Service Scholars program during the enrollment period. Transfer students must have three semesters remaining to enroll. When enrolling, students should sign up for an orientation session or make sure that they will be available for an orientation session the following semester. Enroll online through the Buckley Portfolio.

APPLES 2018 Alternative Spring Break applications

APPLES Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program takes place in the spring semester through both classroom interaction and an immersive experience for eight days during spring break in March. The learning begins before spring break as participants attend classroom sessions designed to prepare them to engage in discussion and service centered on their chosen focus area. Community partners with growing needs or specialized projects are encouraged to apply to participate in the Service-Learning Internship program. Service-learning internships are open to full-time undergraduates and offer students the opportunity to participate in a deep and meaningful professional experience while partners work with some of the brightest students at UNC. The devastating disasters that struck Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and Mexico affected the lives of millions, including families of UNC students, staff and faculty. To help those impacted, the Tar Heel community will host the Carolina Bucket Brigade to assemble cleaning kit buckets 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Nov. 10 in the Pit and in the Blue Zone at Kenan Stadium.
