Summer Internships

Selected UNC students serve as full-time (40 hours per week), paid interns in service organizations throughout North Carolina for eight to 10 weeks during the summer.

For Summer 2019, APPLES is excited to partner with the UNC Institute of Politics to offer additional positions with legislators, government departments and advocacy groups both on the local and state level. Applicants should be aware that some positions may require an additional interview with IOP representatives.

Academic Credit

Interns earn one hour of academic credit for the summer internship. Selected interns will enroll in CCO SOWO 492, offered by Carolina Courses Online summer program through the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. The course covers material on characteristics of nonprofits, including organization structure, funding, volunteer management and leadership. The class follows a discussion/seminar format and compliments the fieldwork through focused readings, discussion boards and reflective writing. For more detail, take a look at a draft syllabus.

All interns will receive $2,500 in funding through a collaborative effort between the APPLES program and the internship site. Stipends are intended to defray the cost of living, transportation and course fees.

A selection of internships with local elected officials are supported by the generous donation of Dr. Jesse L. White. Read more about his gift here

Partial, need-based financial assistance will be available to those who qualify. Students may apply for financial assistance after they have been selected as an intern.

Housing and Travel
Students are responsible for summer housing and travel arrangements. Please keep in mind there are several positions this year that are based in Washington, DC and Asheville, NC as well as across the Triangle.

Application Process

Students are invited to preference up to three positions on their application. Applications will be reviewed and students will participate in a first round of interviews with our APPLES internship leadership committee. The committee will facilitate a placement process to provide each internship site with a smaller selection of 3-6 final candidates. We can not guarantee students will receive an interview with their first preference. Internship host sites will then proceed with their own individual interview process to make their selection.
