A Message From Chancellor Folt
Dear Carolina Community,
Last weekend, the people of Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake that affected millions, leaving a death toll of more than 6,000, and the number continues to rise.
It will be weeks before Nepalese officials know the full extent of the human toll, and there will be many years of rebuilding ahead. My thoughts are with the Nepalese people and everyone affected, including those in our campus community who have family and loved ones in the area. We also have one professor who was conducting research in Nepal at the time of the earthquake. She is managing an uncertain situation very well and remains there to help the people who so desperately need assistance right now.
On that note, Carolina offices and organizations are working to make available information about how you too can help. The best source of updated information will be on our Carolina Center for Public Service website, an excellent campus resource for public service and engagement. The center will collect and share information about relief efforts and you can send information by emailing ccps@unc.edu.
In the meantime, there are resources and support available on campus for people who have been affected by the earthquake and its aftermath. Students may contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 919-966-4042, as well as Counseling and Wellness Services, part of Campus Health Services, at 919-966-3658. Faculty or staff may call the Employee Assistance Program at 919-929-2362 during business hours or 877-327-7658 twenty-four hours a day.
We will continue to share updated information about any Carolina relief efforts in Nepal, so please check the Carolina Center for Public Service website frequently.
My heart is with those with those affected by the earthquakes and I’ll continue to keep them in my thoughts. I’m grateful to be surrounded by a community committed to assisting people during their time of need.
