Service Learning Initiative: Engage

APPLES Service-Learning is accepting applications for SLI: Engage, which will take place April 6 - 7. Any UNC student can apply for SLI: Engage. This is a great way to learn more about service opportunities available in the community and meet fellow students who are also passionate about service. Participants will work with at least two service sites and engage in discussions related to service sustainability. Apply by March 5 through the Carolina Center for Public Service Application and Nomination Portal.

Course Development Institute registration

APPLES Service-Learning’s annual Course Development Institute on Service-Learning will be May 15, 2018. Registration opens March 12. Topics include service-learning pedagogy, faculty course models, partnership development and course design. Faculty and instructors new to service-learning as well as those with experience are encouraged to attend. There is no cost for UNC participants, however, space is limited. 2018 Thorp Faculty Engaged Scholars call for applications

The Carolina Center for Public Service is accepting applications for Class VII of the Thorp Faculty Engaged Scholars program (FES). FES brings together selected Carolina faculty from across campus to engage in a two-year experiential, competency-based curriculum designed to advance their engaged scholarship. Up to 10 faculty members are selected every other year. SMART Mentoring applications

SMART Mentoring engages UNC undergraduate students and local middle-school students in mentoring relationships. The program targets students from low-income communities and focuses on issues of race, class and gender. SMART is designed for highly motivated students who are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of youth. APPLES Service-Learning offers the Service-Learning Initiative (SLI) as a unique student-led introduction to service-learning and the local Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. SLI Launch is a three-day experience for incoming first-year and transfer students to learn about service-learning in the local community. Applications for the 2018 Service-Learning Initiative open April 2, 2018 and will be accepted online through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.

APPLES Service-Learning Course Partnership Grant applications

Students and community partners connected to an APPLES Service-Learning course are eligible to apply for a partnership grant. These grants are intended to benefit the community partner and deepen the service-learning experience for a student. APPLES is offering up to 10 partnership grants of up to $100 each for the current semester. These grants fund supplementary materials for enhancement projects relating to a community partner. APPLES Service-Learning Course Enhancement Grant applications

Each semester, APPLES Service-Learning awards course enhancement grants up to $500 to APPLES faculty. These grants can fund course development materials or support required for APPLES service-learning courses. Past course enhancement grants provided supplies for a community cooking class, funding for a field trip to a nuclear reactor and computer software to assist with community-based research. Apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by April 27, 2018.

2018 Buckley Public Service Scholars graduation event

The 2018 class of Buckley Public Service Scholars will be recognized at a graduation event 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, May 11 at Memorial Hall. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and guests do not need tickets to enter. A photographer will take a photo of each graduate on stage as they receive their cord and certificate and photos will be made available to each senior.
