9/9 – Apply for APPLES 2019 Alternative Fall Break
Applications for APPLES Service-Learning Alternative Fall Break (AFB) are open until Sept. 9. Through AFB, students learn and serve outside the UNC-CH community over fall break. Before the break experience, participants attend orientation sessions to prepare for the challenges and issues they will confront. During the break, students collaborate with community service partners in various capacities, engaging in direct and indirect service as well as advocacy work. 9/9 – Community Partners: Apply by Sept. 9 to host a spring APPLES intern
Community partners with growing needs or specialized projects are encouraged to apply to participate in the APPLES Service-Learning spring internship program. Community partners propose a service-learning internship, and the APPLES program publicizes the position. Open to full-time undergraduates, these internships offer students the opportunity to participate in meaningful professional experience – while partners get to work with some of the brightest students at Carolina. Spring interns work 150 hours (10 – 15 hours per week) during the spring semester and receive $1,200 in funding ($600 provided by APPLES and $600 provided by the community partner). 9/12 – CarolinaServes: Fair – register by Sept. 12
CCPS and UNC Student Government’s Community Service Committee will host the CarolinaServes: Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 in the Pit (near UNC Student Stores, 207 South Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514). This is an event for local nonprofits and Carolina organizations to share community involvement opportunities and recruit new volunteers/members. Organizations interested in participating should complete the online registration form by Thursday, Sept. 12. Space is limited and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. One parking voucher per organization will be provided upon request.
9/16 – Paid position for graduate students
CCPS offers support for up to 10 Carolina graduate students to serve as skills training facilitators and share their expertise with undergraduate students engaged in service in the community and on campus. Selected graduate students are required to facilitate at least two skills trainings (one per semester) for Buckley Public Service Scholars (BPSS) participants as well as help with the review process of BPSS portfolios submitted by graduating seniors. After completing these requirements, each graduate student receives a $600 stipend. BPSS graduate assistant applications are accepted until Sept. 16 through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
9/30 – Calling all undergraduates: Become a Buckley Public Service Scholar
BPSS provides a framework for Carolina undergraduate students committed to making a positive impact through service. BPSS challenges participants to expand their understanding of service, connect academic and community-based experiences and build their capacity to help effect change. Enrollment for Fall 2019 ends Sept. 30.
10/22 – Have a social impact project idea? Apply for the Bryan Fellowship
The Robert E. Bryan Fellowship in the APPLES Service-Learning program is designed for undergraduate student teams interested in creating social impact locally and/or globally through the creation of an innovative project that addresses a community-identified need. Applications for 2019 Bryan Fellowships are accepted until Oct. 22 through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
Faculty/Instructors: Do you need money to start or improve a service-learning course?
Applications are currently open for faculty and instructors to apply for a Course Development Grant. These awards of up to $5,000 are provided to help you develop a new or modify an existing service-learning course. We accept applications on a rolling basis through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
Apply for a grant to support your disaster recovery project
CCPS manages a Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in North Carolina. We provide grants of up to $5,000 to enable project-based public service efforts by UNC-Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty. To apply, visit the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. All projects should be conducted with a community partner and address a stated need of the community. While proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis, CCPS will review project grants quarterly at the following deadlines: Aug. 30, Dec. 5 and Feb. 28. Additionally, CCPS offers grants of up to $1,000 for disaster relief trips. Carolina students, faculty and staff can apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Faculty and staff may be eligible to use Community Service Leave hours for relief trips.
Announcing Service Partnership Mini-Grants
In celebration of our 20th anniversary, CCPS is offering Service Partnership Mini-Grants to Carolina students. We intend for these mini-grants, which range from $150-300, to help build deeper connections between Carolina students and off-campus community partners by funding project- or event-based collaborations. Apply online though the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal, and email Ryan Nilsen with questions.

Hunger relief and nutrition education nonprofit seeks fall semester interns
TABLE, Inc., a nonprofit that provides healthy food and nutrition education to local children in Orange County, is searching for program and farm interns to help with project-based activities. Intern tasks will include leading weekly volunteer shifts and assisting program directors. Interns should be organized and detail-oriented. Access to a car is preferred but not required. 8/29 – Join the UNC Initiative on Poverty and Inequality
Interested in helping to combat poverty and inequality in North Carolina? Come to the UNC Initiative on Poverty and Inequality interest meeting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the 1789 co-working space (173 East Franklin Street). The initiative is an organization of Carolina students working on community-based projects to promote education access, workers’ rights and food security on campus and throughout the state. 9/7 – Health, empowerment and rights activist summit
You’re invited to the 2019 HER Summit from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Chapel Hill. Goals: To provide skills, strategy and advocacy tools for reproductive rights activists. Workshops will include sessions on grassroots organizing, candidate engagement, get-out-the-vote efforts and how to effectively #Fight4HER. Apply online.
9/19 – Seeking volunteers for community cookout
Help out at the 2019 Good Neighbor Initiative (GNI) Community Cookout! Previously known as the Good Neighbor Initiative Block Party and Neighborhood Night Out, this community event takes place on Thursday, Sept. 19. GNI engages student and non-student residents of the downtown residential neighborhoods to improve relationships and quality of life in these areas. This endeavor is a collaboration between UNC Off-Campus Student Life, the Town of Chapel Hill, the Marian Cheek Jackson Center and EmPOWERment, Inc. 9/21 – Durham arts festival volunteers needed
Volunteer with CenterFest, an arts festival hosted by the Durham Arts Council on Sept. 21 and 22. CenterFest showcases more than 80 performance groups and 140 visual artists. 9/3 – Coach a youth soccer team this fall
Rainbow Soccer, a Chapel Hill nonprofit, is looking for volunteer coaches for the fall season: Sept. 3 to Nov. 2. Some experience working with youth is required; previous playing/coaching experience is a plus, as is some fluency in Spanish. Time commitments are between one and three hours per week depending on what age group you coach. For more information, email Karen Aldridge.
9/6 – Become a Community Empowerment Fund Advocate
As a Community Empowerment Fund Advocate, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely alongside a CEF Member on their goals: everything from financial coaching, connecting to resources and building savings to searching for right-sized housing and employment. 9/9 – Help student with special needs learn to swim
Work one-on-one with a student (likely with autism). You don’t need to know how to teach swimming. In the pool, you will assist swimmers in practicing what the instructor teaches. Mondays, 6:30 p.m.-7:15 p.m. and/or 7:30 p.m.-8:15 p.m. from Sept. 9 to Oct. 7 and from Oct. 21 to Nov. 11. Volunteers must be able to commit to all consecutive weeks of class session. Carolina Navigators Global Service-Learning Experience
Carolina Navigators is a selective service-learning program at UNC-CH. Throughout the semester, students learn about global education and increase their intercultural knowledge by creating global education resources for K-12 students and educators in North Carolina. The Experience began the first week of classes, but Carolina Navigators will continue accepting applications into September as long as space allows. SCALE Reads and Counts is hiring literacy tutors
SCALE Reads and Counts hires undergraduate students who receive Federal Work-Study awards as literacy tutors to provide one-to-one tutoring twice a week at local elementary and middle schools. Tutors receive thorough initial training and bi-weekly sessions throughout the year to learn effective and equitable tutoring techniques and increase awareness around social justice issues that impact our youth and our communities. Preparing International Teaching Assistants
Carolina’s Preparing International Teaching Assistants Program seeks undergraduate volunteers to serve as classroom consultants and conversation partners to support international graduate students who will serve as TAs for undergraduate courses. A commitment of 10 to 15 hours per semester is expected during the fall semester. All majors welcome. Great experience for students interested in education, global studies, languages and culture. Central Regional Hospital Student Volunteer Program
Central Regional Hospital is a state psychiatric facility in Butner, N.C., that offers a volunteer program for college students. Help with adult education at El Centro Hispano
El Centro Hispano is seeking volunteers for adult education programs, which include English conversation classes, computer classes, high school equivalency test preparation classes and more. Youth sports league coaches needed
Carrboro Recreation and Parks is seeking volunteer coaches for a number of youth sports leagues including basketball, baseball, flag football and soccer.
