OPPORTUNITIES AT CCPS
TODAY – Apply for Davis Projects for Peace
The Davis Projects for Peace award is open to all undergraduates at the 76 institutions (including UNC-Chapel Hill) that are part of the Davis United World College Scholars Program. The program invites students to design grassroots projects to implement during the summer. Selected projects are funded with $10,000 each. Apply online through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by 11:59 p.m. today, Jan. 20.
2/3 – Grad students: Apply to be a Community Engagement Fellow
Through the Community Engagement Fellowship, CCPS awards up to eight fellowships of up to $2,000 each year for engagement or engaged scholarship projects that are responsive to community priorities and have an academic connection. Returning, full-time graduate and professional students at Carolina are eligible to apply. The application deadline is Monday, Feb. 3. Apply online through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
2/3 – Apply for North Carolina Outward Bound Scholarship
Each year, CCPS awards scholarships for undergraduate students at Carolina to participate in a 28-day course over the summer through North Carolina Outward Bound School. Recipients receive full tuition for the course and Wilderness First Aid certification when completed. Students must enroll in a one-credit-hour education course in fall 2020. 2/7 – Apply for the Mingma Norbu Sherpa Fellowship
The Mingma Norbu Sherpa Fellowship will provide a $1,900 award to support field study and engaged research in environmental areas at field sites, preferably abroad. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student at the UNC-Chapel Hill continuing their studies at Carolina in the semester following their fellowship. Apply online through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by Feb. 7.
2/7 – Submit nominations for Robert E. Bryan Public Service Awards
CCPS is now accepting nominations for the Robert E. Bryan Public Service Awards. Bryan awards recognize an outstanding undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty member, staff member and officially recognized student organization. To nominate, submit a brief two-paragraph nomination by Feb. 7 through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
2/7 – Submit nominations for Office of the Provost Awards
CCPS is now accepting nominations for the Office of the Provost Engaged Scholarship Awards. Three individuals will receive Provost Awards: one each for engaged teaching, engaged research and engaged partnership. To nominate, submit a brief two-paragraph nomination through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by Feb. 7. We will invite selected nominees to complete a more detailed submission about their work by Feb. 21.
2/24 – Apply for Desai Travel Grant
The J. Desai Global Service-Learning Travel Grant offsets travel costs for APPLES program participants who are extending their work with communities abroad. We typically award $500 grants to two recipients each year. Grant recipients must be undergraduate students, have a current or previous APPLES experience and show a demonstrated commitment to academics. Apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by Monday, Feb. 24.
2/28 – Submit nominations for Ned Brooks Award
The Ned Brooks Award for Public Service recognizes a staff or faculty member of the UNC-Chapel Hill community who has, in a collaborative and sustained manner, made a difference in the larger community throughout their career. To nominate, submit a nomination by Feb. 7 through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Recipients will receive a $1,200 award.
Faculty/Instructors: Do you need money to start or improve a service-learning course?
Applications are currently open for faculty and instructors to apply for a Course Development Grant. These awards of up to $5,000 are provided to help you develop a new or modify an existing service-learning course. We accept applications on a rolling basis through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
Apply for a grant to support your disaster recovery project
CCPS manages a Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in North Carolina. We provide grants of up to $5,000 to enable project-based public service efforts by UNC-Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty. To apply, visit the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. All projects should be conducted with a community partner and address a stated need of the community. While proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis, CCPS will review project grants on Feb. 28. Additionally, CCPS offers grants of up to $1,000 for disaster relief trips. Carolina students, faculty and staff can apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Faculty and staff may be eligible to use Community Service Leave hours for relief trips.
Service Partnership Mini-Grants
In celebration of our 20th anniversary, CCPS is offering Service Partnership Mini-Grants to Carolina students. We intend for these mini-grants, which range from $150-300, to help build deeper connections between Carolina students and off-campus community partners by funding project- or event-based collaborations. Apply online though the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal, and email Ryan Nilsen with questions.
Faculty/staff: Create a profile in the new engaged scholarship directory
The Community Engaged Scholars Directory showcases faculty and staff from across UNC-Chapel Hill who conduct community-engaged scholarship. We hope this directory will draw attention to engaged scholarship at Carolina and help foster university-wide connections surrounding engagement. If you’re a Carolina faculty or staff member whose work is community-engaged, please consider registering yourself in the directory! We encourage all Carolina constituents to use this directory as a resource for connecting with others committed to engaging communities through their research and teaching.
INTERNSHIPS, JOBS, FUNDING & AWARDS
1/27 – Paid domestic violence court advocacy internship
Compass Center is hiring a paid spring 2020 court intern. This internship is an opportunity for people interested in domestic or interpersonal violence response, social justice and the legal system. It involves actively supporting survivors of domestic violence, including survivors seeking legal relief. In addition to the online application, submit a resume and cover letter to Madison Burke by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.
1/29 – Apply to get funding for self-designed projects
Interested in pursuing projects that explore European art, literature, music, history, politics, economics, philosophy or religion? Apply for the Robinson Honors Fellowship. Or consider the Burch Fellowship: the ultimate “go anywhere” opportunity to plan and design an experience anywhere in the world. Both fellowships fund projects up to $6,000. 1/31 – Apply for Bridge Year Fellowship
If you could dedicate a year between your sophomore and junior years at Carolina to do public service anywhere in the world, where would you go? What would you do? The Golden Gap Year Fellowship will be awarded this spring to a second-semester sophomore who will take a year away from UNC-Chapel Hill to engage in international service before returning in fall 2021. 2/10 – Apply for nonprofit summer internship program
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation’s Non-Profit Internship Program awards paid internship opportunities for undergraduate students. Students spend a minimum of eight weeks during the summer with host organizations. Internships offer a range of exposure and skill-building opportunities in areas such as research, community outreach, public policy, communications, fundraising and social media. Interns will receive a taxable stipend of $3,200. Applications are due by 12 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10.
3/18 – Apply for Faculty Scholars program for the Carolina Women’s Center
The Carolina Women’s Center is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Faculty Scholars Program. The program awards three separate grants of $10,000 each to support scholarly, engaged or creative research on topics related to women, sex, gender equity and/or all intersections of gender. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. Visit the CWC website for more information on applicant criteria. Apply for United Nations Millennium Fellowship
The United Nations Academic Impact and MCN proudly present the Millennium Fellowship. This program convenes, challenges and celebrates bold student leadership advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on campus and in communities. As a Millennium Fellow, you will hone skills, take concrete action and earn a certificate of recognition from the United Nations Academic Impact and MCN. There is no cost for selected students. Crisis hotline internships and volunteering
HopeLine is a family of confidential services that provides a crisis hotline, textline and a daily wellness check-in call program in the Triangle. HopeLine helps callers in all types of crises. Crisis line volunteering and internship opportunities are great for those interested in psychology, social work, counseling and other human services fields. UPCOMING EVENTS
1/20 – Rally, march and interfaith service
At 9 a.m. on Jan. 20, Carolina senior and Chapel Hill Town Councilman Tai Huynh will lead a rally at the Peace and Justice Plaza in Chapel Hill. The rally will be followed by a march to First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. There, participants can enjoy coffee and conversations before hearing from keynote speaker Gene Nichol at an interfaith service at 11 a.m. First Baptist Church is located at 106 N. Roberson St.
1/20 – Dream Big book drive
Dream Big is an annual celebration of books for kids. This community event is part book drive, part concert, part food truck rodeo, part activity fair, part volunteer opportunity … and all celebration and fun. In 2019, the event brought in 44,092 donated books. More than 600 people attended, and the event raised $100,592 to help keep books flowing to young readers all year long. This year, the event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at Rhythms Live Music Hall in the Lakewood Shopping Center in Durham (2020 Chapel Hill Road, Site 33, Durham, NC 27707).
1/20 – MLK Park ribbon cutting
The town of Carrboro invites you to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Watch as town officials cut the ribbon on this much-anticipated park. The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. at the park site (1120 Hillsborough Road). Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, you’re invited to check out the park and honor the spirit of Dr. King by partaking in community fellowship. Refreshments will be provided.
1/21 – Performance: He Was a Poem, He Was a Song
Join the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History in this celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through music and song. This annual program features vocal, dance and spoken word groups from the campus and community. The event is 6-7:30 p.m. Parking is available after 5 p.m. in the Bell Tower Deck directly behind the Stone Center. For more information, visit the UNC MLK Week of Celebration website.
1/22 – MLK lecture and awards ceremony
7 p.m. at Memorial Hall on campus. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, author, radio host and Georgetown University sociology professor, will deliver the keynote. 1/21 – Carolina Navigators Global Service Learning Experience
Carolina Navigators is a selective global service-learning program at UNC-Chapel Hill. Throughout the semester, students learn about global education and increase their intercultural knowledge by creating global education resources for K-12 students and educators in NC. The deadline for non-APPLES students has passed. APPLES students can apply until Jan. 21 via the Carolina Navigators Google form.
Starting Feb. 1: Attend UNC Rethink spring 2020 trainings
Sign up for the UNC Rethink Psychiatric Illness trainings, which will go over the basics of mental health and how to be an ally to those with mental illnesses. This can be used as a BPSS skill training. The spring 2020 training sessions will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

2/5 – Register for social change competition
Interested in social or environmental change? Register for Map the System, a global competition challenging you to research issues from a systems perspective. Finalists present at the University of Oxford for cash prizes, with all expenses covered. If you have any questions, email the organization.
Rainbow Soccer seeking spring 2020 volunteer coaches
Rainbow Soccer is seeking volunteer coaches for players (ages 3-15 years old) for the spring 2020 season. Teams have many native Spanish speakers, along with those seeking refuge in the United States. There are also girls-only teams. Commitment ranges between one and four hours per week, depending on the chosen program. Join the 30+ Carolina students who volunteer with Rainbow each season. Volunteers needed for Cooking Matters for Kids program
No Kid Hungry NC is looking for volunteers to assist with the Cooking Matters for Kids program, a hands-on, nutrition and cooking education program for third through fifth grade children. Volunteers help with lessons either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. at local afterschool programs. For additional information, contact Jessica Soldavini.
Help run day program for adults with development disabilities
Volunteers are needed to help with an adult program run by a recreation therapist from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Thursday at Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation. There is the option to commit to a two-hour shift (9:30-11:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) or stay the whole time. Grad students: Enroll in Public Horizons in Graduate Scholarship course
The Humanities for the Public Good Initiative (HPG) invites graduate students to enroll in a one-credit Public Horizons in Graduate Scholarship course, which will focus on building professional skills and mentoring opportunities, as well as cultivating meaningful careers as public scholars. Students who complete the course and want to continue the work will be eligible to apply for a top-up award from HPG in fall 2020. If you’re interested, fill out the form.
Volunteer with refugee healthcare hotspotting project
Refugee Community Partnership is hosting a home-visit based healthcare hotspotting research project. Interprofessional student volunteer teams will have the opportunity to conduct home visits to assist with socioeconomic and healthcare access related needs of refugees and other people at high risk of homelessness. Youth baseball coaches needed
Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting volunteer coach applications for the 2020 spring baseball program. Coaches must exhibit the ability to organize practices and communicate effectively with players (ages 6-12 years old), parents and the Recreation Department staff. TABLE needs team leaders for spring 2020
TABLE is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of team leader positions. These roles include leading a weekly nutrition education program at a local community center to teach kids about healthy eating and habits, and overseeing volunteer shifts to package bags. Bike across the country and benefit affordable housing
Are you looking for a valuable way to spend your summer? Bike & Build is a nonprofit that organizes cross-country and regional cycling trips for young adults (ages 18-29) to benefit affordable housing. Teams bike together, stopping every three to five days to build affordable homes for families across the country. 2020 applications are open! Happy Kids Healthy Kids looking for volunteers
Happy Kids Healthy Kids goes to surrounding elementary and middle schools to help teach healthy eating habits, exercise and body positivity to children. Volunteer with a Hillsborough food pantry
Volunteer at the Hillsborough Church of God Food pantry, which serves on average 245 families and a total of 675 people each month. The pantry serves vulnerable populations that include female-headed single parent households, people experiencing homelessness, people struggling with alcohol and substance dependence, survivors of domestic violence, migrants and low-income families. Volunteer with Democracy NC to support voting rights
Volunteer tasks include: voter education research projects; data entry; making event turn out, get out the vote and issue advocacy texts and calls; support tasks; and serving as a nonpartisan poll monitor on Election Day. Please contact Juliana for more information. A typical shift is two hours on weekdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Democracy NC’s Durham office.
