OPPORTUNITIES AT CCPS
TODAY – Have a social impact project idea? Apply for the Bryan Fellowship
The Robert E. Bryan Fellowship in the APPLES Service-Learning program is designed for undergraduate student teams interested in creating social impact locally and/or globally through the creation of an innovative project that addresses a community-identified need. Today is the last day applications for 2019 Bryan Fellowships are accepted through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Please note the application deadline was listed incorrectly in previous Public Service News emails; the deadline is today, Oct. 21.
11/4 – Apply for an APPLES Alternative Spring Break (ASB)
The ASB program takes place in the spring semester through both classroom interaction and an immersive experience for eight days during spring break in March. Trip focus areas include: rural communities, urban communities, civil rights, disaster relief and Latinx communities. An interest meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Dey Hall, room 210. 11/8 – Submit a proposal for the Connect, Engage, Transform Conference
CCPS and partners are hosting the Connect, Engage, Transform: Rural Community Partnerships conference to bring together stakeholders from North Carolina’s rural communities and UNC-Chapel Hill to highlight and encourage authentic, effective and sustainable collaborations for the public good. We are currently accepting presentation proposals from teams of active and innovative academic and community partners who are working for the advancement of North Carolina’s rural communities. Faculty/Instructors: Do you need money to start or improve a service-learning course?
Applications are currently open for faculty and instructors to apply for a Course Development Grant. These awards of up to $5,000 are provided to help you develop a new or modify an existing service-learning course. We accept applications on a rolling basis through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
Apply for a grant to support your disaster recovery project
CCPS manages a Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in North Carolina. We provide grants of up to $5,000 to enable project-based public service efforts by UNC-Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty. To apply, visit the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. All projects should be conducted with a community partner and address a stated need of the community. While proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis, CCPS will review project grants at the following deadlines: Dec. 5 and Feb. 28. For questions, email Kate Palmer or call 919-843-6616.
Additionally, CCPS offers grants of up to $1,000 for disaster relief trips. Carolina students, faculty and staff can apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Faculty and staff may be eligible to use Community Service Leave hours for relief trips.
New Service Partnership Mini-Grants
In celebration of our 20th anniversary, CCPS is offering Service Partnership Mini-Grants to Carolina students. We intend for these mini-grants, which range from $150-300, to help build deeper connections between Carolina students and off-campus community partners by funding project- or event-based collaborations. Apply online though the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal, and email Ryan Nilsen with questions.
Faculty/staff: Create a profile in the new engaged scholarship directory
The Community Engaged Scholars Directory showcases faculty and staff from across UNC-Chapel Hill who conduct community-engaged scholarship. We hope this directory will draw attention to engaged scholarship at Carolina and help foster university-wide connections surrounding engagement. If you’re a Carolina faculty or staff member whose work is community-engaged, please consider registering yourself in the directory! We encourage all Carolina constituents to use this directory as a resource for connecting with others committed to engaging communities through their research and teaching.

10/31 – Apply for the Princeton in Asia Fellowship
Princeton in Asia (PiA) fosters mutual appreciation and cultural understanding by connecting service-minded graduates and partner organizations through immersive work experiences that transform perspectives, cultivate long-lasting relationships and benefit local and global communities. The application is due on Oct. 31.
Apply for special events internship at Orange County Rape Crisis Center (OCRCC)
Looking for a chance to gain valuable marketing, event planning and fundraising experience while assisting a great cause? The special events intern will work closely with the development and communications team at the OCRCC to assist with preparations for the 32nd Annual Holiday Auction, which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 8. 10/22 – Healthy Relationships Workshop
For Relationship Violence Awareness Month, Healthy Heels Ambassadors presents the Healthy Relationships Workshop in partnership with the Campus Y and Feminism for All. Join and discuss characteristics of healthy relationships, gain skills to help you understand your wants, needs and boundaries, and learn communication strategies to improve relationships. The workshop will be held at at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 in the Student Union, room 2423. If you have any questions, email the organization.
10/25 – Habitat for Humanity Roofing Blitz
Habitat for Humanity is hoping to finish construction of its houses in the Crescent-Magnolia neighborhood in Hillsborough by the end of this year and needs volunteers at the Roofing Blitz to complete roof shingling on the final building on Friday, Oct. 25 in two shifts: 8:15 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1-4:30 p.m. No experience is required. Both Carolina students and employees are encouraged to come out. As a reminder, Habitat for Humanity is an approved option for Carolina employees to use allocated Community Service Leave, with prior permission of their supervisor.
10/26 – Raleigh 5k supporting Prevent Child Abuse NC
Prevent Child Abuse NC is celebrating its 40th year by hosting a 5k at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh on Oct. 26. You can support the event by registering to run or by volunteering that day. Contact Anne Korfas with questions.

TODAY – Interest meeting for leading outdoor youth summer trips
Overland is an outdoor company that hires college students and recent graduates to lead summer trips across the country and around the world. Its staff of over 200 leaders and support staff spend ten days training and six weeks leading or supporting trips throughout the summer. The interest meeting will be held from 7-8 p.m. today, Oct. 21, in the Student Union, room 3203. Leader applications are due Nov. 11. Email Sara Levine with any questions.
11/10 – Student organizations needed for household supply drive
The Branching Out program of Families Moving Forward assists families transitioning out of homelessness into permanent housing. The annual supply drive collects household items such as paper towels and Windex to provide to clients. If your organization would like to make a real impact for local families by collecting items, please contact Lawrence McBride by Nov. 10.

Carolina Closet is an organization that gives students and faculty access to donated business attire for professional opportunities. The organization seeks someone passionate about equity and opportunity who is interested in developing marketing strategies to join the team. Public health nonprofit seeks communications professionals
MiracleFeet, a Chapel Hill-based international public health nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to clubfoot treatment in low-income countries, is seeking to fill two marketing/communications positions: a marketing and communications manager and a senior writer and content producer. Applications open for queer_hack
Queer_hack is a new student organization focused on building community and support networks for LGBTQ+ students interested in tech. The first ever hackathon created by and for queer students will be held in November 2020. The organization is also developing a peer study group program, hosting social and community events all year round and exploring the possibility of future programs. Apply to join the team.
Volunteer at Edible Campus Garden
Want to help grow food across campus? Come out to the weekly Edible Campus UNC Garden Workdays to help maintain gardens across campus. Tasks include planting, harvesting, watering, weeding and more. No experience necessary. Held 3:30-5 p.m. every Monday at Edible Campus Garden behind Davis Library. If you are part of an organization, fill out this form for a special work day.
Work with individuals with disabilities at The Arc of the Triangle
The Arc of the Triangle is seeking friendly, caring and reliable people to work with children and adults with disabilities (participants) as support professionals. Selected candidates will provide one-on-one direct care support to participants at home and in the community to help them meet their individual goals through skill-building, supported employment and community involvement. Volunteer to lead a nutrition education program
TABLE is looking for SnackChef Team Leaders for fall 2019! Volunteers will help lead a weekly nutrition education program at local community centers. SnackChef is a fun and interactive way to teach kids about nutrition and encourage them to eat healthy foods. Each week you will help teach a nutrition lesson, lead an interactive activity and teach kids how to make a healthy snack. Volunteers needed at hunger relief organization
TABLE is the only local nonprofit dedicated to feeding hungry children in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and neighboring Orange County communities. The organization is always looking for volunteers. Fill out the volunteer form to gain access to its online calendar to sign up for volunteer shifts.
Volunteer with Democracy NC to support voting rights
Volunteer tasks include: voter education research projects; data entry; making event turn out, get out the vote and issue advocacy texts and calls; support tasks; and serving as a nonpartisan poll monitor on Election Day. Support Holiday Auction at Orange County Rape Crisis Center (OCRCC)
On Sunday, Dec. 8, the OCRCC is hosting its annual gala at the Carolina Inn to help support the organization’s free services. The event includes a reception, silent auction, live music and a plated dinner along with a special guest speaker. Volunteer with the Orange County Rape Crisis Center
Consider joining the OCRCC Core training, the new training curriculum for all volunteers. This comprehensive 25-hour program prepares all volunteers to understand OCRCC’s mission and values, work alongside staff and interact with clients in an affirming and trauma-informed way. After completing the Core, you will select which volunteer position is right for you, and then have a specialized training based on that position.
Attend Wednesdays at the Y leadership workshops
Wednesdays at the Y is a leadership series aimed at helping you lead your committee, campaign or venture to sustainable success. Join every Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m in the Campus Y’s Anne Queen Lounge. Food will be provided. Find out this week’s topic and speaker online.
Youth basketball coaches needed
Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is seeking volunteer coaches for the 2019-2020 Youth Basketball Program. Coaches must exhibit the ability to teach good sportsmanship and organize practices, prepare for games and communicate effectively with players, parents and Recreation Department staff. No Kid Hungry NC seeks volunteers for kids’ nutrition program
No Kid Hungry NC is looking for volunteers to assist with the Cooking Matters for Kids program, which is a hands-on nutrition and cooking education program for 3rd-5th grade children.
