OPPORTUNITIES AT CCPS
2/24 – Apply for Desai Travel Grant
The J. Desai Global Service-Learning Travel Grant offsets travel costs for APPLES program participants who are extending their work with communities abroad. We typically award $500 grants to two recipients each year. Grant recipients must be undergraduate students, have a current or previous APPLES experience and show a demonstrated commitment to academics. Apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal by Monday, Feb. 24.
2/28 – Submit nominations for Ned Brooks Award
The Ned Brooks Award for Public Service recognizes a staff or faculty member of the UNC-Chapel Hill community who has, in a collaborative and sustained manner, made a difference in the larger community throughout their career. To nominate, submit a nomination by Feb. 28 through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Recipients will receive a $1,200 award.
Faculty/Instructors: Do you need money to start or improve a service-learning course?
Applications are currently open for faculty and instructors to apply for a Course Development Grant. These awards of up to $5,000 are provided to help you develop a new or modify an existing service-learning course. We accept applications on a rolling basis through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal.
Apply for a grant to support your disaster recovery project
CCPS manages a Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing hurricane recovery efforts in North Carolina. We provide grants of up to $5,000 to enable project-based public service efforts by UNC-Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty. To apply, visit the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. All projects should be conducted with a community partner and address a stated need of the community. While proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis, CCPS will review project grants on Feb. 28. Additionally, CCPS offers grants of up to $1,000 for disaster relief trips. Carolina students, faculty and staff can apply through the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal. Faculty and staff may be eligible to use Community Service Leave hours for relief trips.
Service Partnership Mini-Grants
In celebration of our 20th anniversary, CCPS is offering Service Partnership Mini-Grants to Carolina students. We intend for these mini-grants, which range from $150-300, to help build deeper connections between Carolina students and off-campus community partners by funding project- or event-based collaborations. Apply online though the CCPS Application and Nomination Portal, and email Ryan Nilsen with questions.
Faculty/staff: Create a profile in the new engaged scholarship directory
The Community Engaged Scholars Directory showcases faculty and staff from across UNC-Chapel Hill who conduct community-engaged scholarship. We hope this directory will draw attention to engaged scholarship at Carolina and help foster university-wide connections surrounding engagement. If you’re a Carolina faculty or staff member whose work is community-engaged, please consider registering yourself in the directory! We encourage all Carolina constituents to use this directory as a resource for connecting with others committed to engaging communities through their research and teaching.
INTERNSHIPS, JOBS, FUNDING & AWARDS
2/29 – Apply to get funding for self-designed projects – DEADLINE EXTENDED
Interested in pursuing projects that explore European art, literature, music, history, politics, economics, philosophy or religion? Apply for the Robinson Honors Fellowship. Or consider the Burch Fellowship: the ultimate “go anywhere” opportunity to plan and design an experience anywhere in the world. Both fellowships fund projects up to $6,000. 3/16 – Apply for paid summer internship at Democracy NC
Democracy NC is seeking interns who will spend the summer in their regional hubs across the state reaching local volunteers, advocating for policies that improve democracy and helping turn out voters for this critical 2020 election. Interns will build relationships and receive training that will help them kickstart a career in social and economic justice, advocacy, research, politics, law, nonprofits or public service. The program lasts nine weeks and interns will earn a $3,700 stipend. Apply online by Monday, March 16. For more information, email Democracy NC with the subject line, “Democracy Summer Application.”
3/18 – Apply for Faculty Scholars program for the Carolina Women’s Center
The Carolina Women’s Center is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Faculty Scholars Program. The program awards three separate grants of $10,000 each to support scholarly, engaged or creative research on topics related to women, sex, gender equity and/or all intersections of gender. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. Visit the CWC website for more information on applicant criteria. Apply for United Nations Millennium Fellowship
The United Nations Academic Impact and MCN proudly present the Millennium Fellowship. This program convenes, challenges and celebrates bold student leadership advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on campus and in communities. As a Millennium Fellow, you will hone skills, take concrete action and earn a certificate of recognition from the United Nations Academic Impact and MCN. There is no cost for selected students. Crisis hotline internships and volunteering
HopeLine is a family of confidential services that provides a crisis hotline, textline and a daily wellness check-in call program in the Triangle. HopeLine helps callers in all types of crises. Crisis line volunteering and internship opportunities are great for those interested in psychology, social work, counseling and other human services fields. 2/29 – Share your experience with international service
A group of master’s students at the Gillings School of Global Public Health is looking for undergraduate students interested in being interviewed about their experiences participating in international service-based trips during their time in undergrad. Fill out the form by Feb. 29 to be interviewed and email the group for any questions.
3/1 – Attend Interfaith Service Day 2020
The second annual Interfaith Service Day will be held from 1-4:30 p.m on Sunday, March 1. Interfaith Service aims to bring together different faith groups on campus with the Chapel Hill community through service. The event will include lunch, an opportunity to learn about different faith groups on campus and service to community sites. All are welcome. Find more information and purchase tickets online.
Fight food waste and hunger with Food Recovery Network
Food Recovery Network, the largest student movement fighting food waste and hunger in America, is looking for new members to join their initiative. The organization recovers leftover food from participating eateries in their area to donate to local shelters. Fill out the form to go on one of their weekly food runs as a simple and fun way to help fight hunger in less than an hour.
Help out with a litter of future service puppies
Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws is looking for whelp homes for future service dogs in training. Volunteers will house a female dog who will be having puppies and help with the rearing of the litter of puppies. Gestation is around two months, and pups are in the home for 5-10 weeks once born. Ideally, volunteers will have easy outdoors access, provide comfort in the homes and be able to keep the dam between litters. Youth baseball coaches needed
Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting volunteer coach applications for the 2020 spring baseball program. Coaches must exhibit the ability to organize practices and communicate effectively with players (ages 6-12 years old), parents and the Recreation Department staff. Attend UNC Rethink Psychiatric Illness trainings
Sign up for the UNC Rethink Psychiatric Illness trainings, which will go over the basics of mental health and how to be an ally to those with mental illnesses. This can be used as a BPSS skill training. The spring 2020 training sessions will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

National Health Corps of Pittsburgh seeking members
National Health Corps of Pittsburgh is an AmeriCorps service program committed to decreasing disparities in healthcare delivery and promoting better health outcomes. Members commit to 1,700 hours of service with a public health or healthcare organization and receive a living stipend for their service. The application for the 2020-2021 service year opens in March. Mentors needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) pairs at-risk youth, or “Littles,” (ages 6-18 years old) with positive adult mentors, or “Bigs,” and has shown to be effective at empowering children. Partnered with Big Buddy, a Campus Y organization, BBBS is seeking mature, involved and compassionate college students for their mentorship program at Northside Elementary. Help a student with disabilities learn to swim
Work one-on-one with a student with disabilities (mostly with autism). No previous swim instructing experience is required. In the pool, volunteers will assist swimmers in practicing what the instructor teaches. Volunteers will meet on Mondays from 6:30-7:15 p.m. and/or 7:30-8:15 p.m. from March 9 to April 13. Rainbow Soccer seeking spring 2020 volunteer coaches
Rainbow Soccer is seeking volunteer coaches for players (ages 3-15 years old) for the spring 2020 season. Teams have many native Spanish speakers, along with those seeking refuge in the United States. There are also girls-only teams. Commitment ranges between one and four hours per week, depending on the chosen program. Join the 30+ Carolina students who volunteer with Rainbow each season. Help run day program for adults with development disabilities
Volunteers are needed to help with an adult program run by a recreation therapist from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Thursday at Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation. There is the option to commit to a two-hour shift (9:30-11:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) or stay the whole time. Help motivate participants to make art, play games and participate in exercise class. Email Marian Kaslovsky for more information.
Happy Kids Healthy Kids looking for volunteers
Happy Kids Healthy Kids goes to surrounding elementary and middle schools to help teach healthy eating habits, exercise and body positivity to children.
