As a university built for the people, public service is at the core of Carolina’s mission.

Over fall break, nearly 100 faculty members and senior administrators took a journey across North Carolina to learn more about the state they serve. The knowledge they gained will inform the work they do every day in Carolina classrooms, offices and labs.

In 1997, then-Chancellor Michael Hooker started the Tar Heel Bus Tour as a means for new University faculty and staff to get to know the communities they served. The University conducted the tour annually until 2008, when the economic recession brought on an 11-year hiatus. When Kevin Guskiewicz was named interim chancellor of the University in spring 2019, he announced that the tour would return. CCPS worked to support the Chancellor’s Office in planning and administering the tour—and celebrating the University’s commitment to the public good.
